"Calm down" is the phrase almost every parent reaches for — and the one that almost never works. It tells a child what we want: quiet, settled, safe. What it doesn't give them is a way to get there. Start with your own nervous system. A dysregulated adult cannot lend calm to a dysregulated child. Slow your breathing, soften your voice, and get low — kneel or sit so you're at or below their eye level. Fewer words carry further when a child is flooded. Name it before you fix it
